WILLIAM MCARTHUR
The codes and conventions of this trailer is firstly the use of suspenseful music throughout the passage, and built up the intensity of it. This adds to the atmosphere of the trailer and makes the audience more intrigued to find out what happens in the trailer. Another convention is the use of low-key lighting. They have done this to add extra tension to their audience and make them think that something bad will happen. Another main convention is that the antagonist is under the mercy of the antagonist. This is shown when the boy is shown to go into the basement and he rings the bell which alerts the antagonist. This is good as it makes the audience sympathise with the protagonist and makes them ask questions of what will happen to the character which is what you want in an trailer.
The genre of the trailer which is drama/trailer is very clear to the audience as the director shows a lot of emotion in the characters when things start to go wrong in the middle of the trailer, this will show that it is a drama/thriller. This trailer follows the codes and conventions of their genre, which makes it very obvious and clear to their audience what genre of movie they are watching. The intense and dramatic soundtrack throughout also makes it easy for the audience to understand that the director is trying to create an ominous atmosphere to make it very vivid to the audience that it is a thriller drama genre. There are a lot of representations in the trailer with the location and the characters, on of which is the main protagonist character. He plays a stereotypical intrigued and persistent character, when all goes wrong and they find out that something wrong is happening in the house they are exploring, he is the one who wants to go back to find out what is happening in the house even though it can cause him danger. This is because the director normally uses this character to create drama or action scenes and to keep the audience entertained and not knowing what will happen. The second main character plays more of the geeky character. They are there to be sensible and to try and stop the other character from doing stupid things which causes a juxtaposition. This will also build up suspense as it will give the audience hints that something bad might happen. Lastly, the house of the old man that they are playing tricks on is very stereotypical as well. This is as they are trying to create a sinister atmosphere, by having an old worn out wooden house which has no modern technology creates a depressing and dull mood. This is very common in films that have a drama or thriller trailer. One way that the trailer communicates with their target audience is that they make the ages of the character the same age as their audiences. This is to make their movie more relatable for their viewers and will be an overall more an enjoyable experience. They show the title of the movie right before the last clip they show. This is because firstly they normally show a scary clip at the end which will shock the audience and make them remember the trailer they had just watched. Secondly it builds up a lot of suspense and tension throughout. Also the fact that it is at the end means that when people finish the trailer they will leave remembering the name as it is the last thing that they saw of the trailer. In this trailer the action scenes are shown to us at the end of the clip usually when they are using montage editing. This is to create this biggest impact at the end of the trailer so that the audience watching will remember it. The action scenes are all only at max 1.5 seconds per shot this is to make sure that the audience can't tell exactly what is happening or what the end result will be. The speed of the clips are all much faster than in the actually movie. This is because the director needs to fit in as many valuable clips as possible to try and display what the movie is about and try and portray some different character. As you have to fit the whole film into 2 minutes they had to keep the speed of the editing fast so that they fit events from throughout the whole movie as they couldn’t just put in the first 30 mins of the movie for example as the audience wouldn’t know anything about the plot. In a single scene of a movie, each scene will have a lot more camera angles and shots in it which make the quality of it a lot better. In this trailer at the very end, we are given information that the old antagonist wakes up and notices that the boy is in his house and acts upon it. This creates an big impact on the audience right at the end which means that it will make it memorable for them. Furthermore, this will make the audience ask lots of questions and wonder what is going to happen in the movie making them more likely to watch the movie. I would expect to see this trailer before movies in the cinema, before movies of the similar genre (horror/thriller). This is because the audience watching the movie playing will most likely be the audience that would also enjoy my own movie. This means that more people would pay attention to my trailer want to watch it. Furthermore I would also show my trailer online through YouTube or Vimeo. This is because you can target a worldwide audience and gain more publicity for your trailer and movie.
